Eyestrain and Computer Work

Eyestrain and Computer Work

Eyestrain with computer work can be a big problem.  Not only is eyestrain detrimental to your vision in the long term, but it also causes poor posture and neck strain.  We tend to lean forward towards our work when we are having trouble seeing the task at hand.  It is this forward leaning posture that results in postural stress

Those of you who have read my prior articles know that postural stress leads to irritation and inflammation of joints and muscles which in turn results in neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, etc.

Reducing eyestrain will help minimize fatigue.  The following guidelines will help you sort out lighting issues with your computer station.

  1. Your work area should have adequate general lighting.
  2. If general lighting is not adequate, you should add a task light for your immediate work area.
  3. Don’t place your monitor directly opposite of a window or other light source.
  4. Tilt your monitor screen slightly downward to avoid reflection or use an anti glare screen if necessary.
  5. Adjust your gaze every ten to fifteen minutes to objects other than your screen to help reduce eyestrain.

The guidelines listed above will help you reduce eyestrain associated with your monitor.  You will increase your chances of experiencing eyestrain and other related stresses by following as many of the guidelines as possible.
