Ergonomics in General

Why Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is a word that describes the science of designing the workplace environment to fit the operator. Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries, which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability.

The International Ergonomics Association defines ergonomics as “the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.”

Ergonomics are employed to fulfill the goals of health and productivity both in the workplace and in at home applications. Ergonomic principals are relevant in the design of such things as furniture, automobile controls and in the design of interfaces to various types of machines.

Ergonomics takes into account of the user's capabilities and limitations in the design of tools, workstations and other equipment.
In order to assess the fit between a person / worker and the equipment, an ergonomist must consider the job or activity and the tasks requirements on the user; the type of equipment used and information regarding use of the equipment.

Ergonomics in the workplace has to do with the safety and productivity of the employees. Ergonomics can help reduce sick leave and worker’s compensation costs by improving safety.

When considering employing ergonomics, employers can either take a reactive or proactive approach.   The basic ergonomic considerations that most office workers need to address include office chair adjustments, monitor height, keyboard placement, mouse placement, lighting and the placement of other frequently used objects.
